Wellness vs. Wellbeing

Wellness is primarily supported through habits of eating, physical activity and quality sleep that all lead to positive health outcomes. Our mental wellbeing is the state of how we feel internally about ourselves and our daily lives, considering physical, mental and emotional factors.


The World Health Organisation defines mental wellness as “a state of well-being in which the individual realises his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.” Mental wellness allows you to cope adequately with whatever life throws at you, while feeling balanced and connected to other people.


Reducing stress, promoting creativity, getting enough rest, spending time within nature, and alleviating anxiety can all boost your mental wellness. Following healthy routines, maintaining supportive relationships with friends and family, and taking care of yourself are all important considerations when assessing your mental wellbeing.



What does ‘mindfulness’ actually mean?

Rooted in Buddhism and meditation practices, ‘mindfulness’ is about being fully present and aware of ourselves and our surroundings. Conscious living and mindfulness are intrinsically linked in an endless loop: the more consciously we live our lives, the more mindful we become. By being present in each and every moment, being aware of what our mind and bodies need, and by focusing on and caring for those needs, we begin to live our lives more mindfully. When we slow down the way we live and tread lighter on our local environment, we make time for mindfulness.


To begin your mindfulness journey, step back and take a closer look at the way you live your life. Are there any habits or routines that no longer serve you, that perhaps don’t seem too bad in the moment but have a greater impact on the rest of your day, the people around you and your surroundings? Consider how you can alleviate these scenarios with mindfulness techniques such as journaling, reading, yoga, meditation or going for a long walk in nature.
